What is meta tags optimization and why is it important?

Meta tags optimization defines meta data -- descriptors in the head of HTML code hidden from the Web page. There are over 30 different meta tag options. However the only tags that concern meta tags optimization are the title, meta description and meta keywords.

  • The title is shown at the top of the browser. Search engines often display the title so it is the first thing searchers read when looking at search results.

  • Search engines often display the meta description. So it should motivate the searcher to click-thru and learn more.

  • The meta keywords should include actual words on that page to be effective with the few search engines still reading them.

  • Meta keywords once held some importance but are now mostly ignored or given low importance by search engines. Google ignores them. Yahoo and MSN, read meta keywords but are only a small part of how they calculate search positions.

Meta tags optimization tips and strategies

You should be aware that meta tags optimization is not a magic solution to high search engine rankings. However, E-Power Marketing® knows how to use meta tag optimization effectively to give your pages higher relevancy with the search engines.

Title - 5 to 8 words or no more 75 characters. The title tag is important in search algorithms. The title must be relevant to the content on the page. Put your most important keywords first, since search engine spiders pay attention to keyword prominence, i.e., where the keyword is placed.

Description - 15 to 25 words or no more than 140 characters. An accurate and sales-like description containing the page's keywords. The description should motivate searchers to click through to your Web site.

Keywords - Use keywords contained in the visible text on the page. 9 to 25 words is the best range. Keywords should not be repeated. You can place the keywords in phrases separated by commas or list each keyword once without commas.
