Forums – Where the consumers are…
A forum is like an online bulletin board. It's a place for open discussion, where people can gather to ask questions, share their knowledge, and network with like minded individuals. There are forums open for a vast array of topics and industries. Whatever your company excels in, there are forums out there you should be involved on.
You can use forums to gauge consumer opinion or to gain exposure. By actively participating on industry related forums, you are able to ensure your company is gaining word of mouth publicity, and you can gauge consumer opinion, both positive and negative.
What to do and what not to do…
To be successful with forum postings, you must get to know the forum, the customs and unspoken rules. You can get a feel for a forum by becoming a member, and taking the time before posting to read through a variety of threads and getting a feel for the main contributors and attitudes of the discussion board. Once you're ready to start getting your information out there, you need to become an active, regular user on the forums. You must post unbiased information and only mention your company or Web site on relevant posts.
Forums are your opportunity to read and become aware of what consumers and the public think of your industry, your company and your brand. You will read both positive and negative comments on forums, and it's important that you know your reason for being there. Forums can and should be used to gauge public perceptions and share the knowledge and resources you have of your industry. It isn't all about pushing your brand.
Luckily, you have information and resources that go beyond your company's products and services. You can add to the discussions, even on posts that you aren't able to logically get your company's name in. The more knowledgeable you seem to other forum members, the more likely they are to listen to your advice when your brand does come up. Forums are no place to Spam. You'll lose the respect of other users, and that will only hurt your brand. Spamming on forums can also get you banned. Just don't do it!
If you continually push your company or Web site, again the moderators will put an end to it. There needs to be a strategy in place. You cannot just join a forum and post about your company and its offerings on every discussion. You need to be relevant and tactful in how you inform the users of your brand. Moderators will delete your accounts and worse yet; dismiss your brand very quickly if you are using the forums only as a place to market.
